Google Ads for service businesses: plan for qualified leads, not just clicks

A paid-search campaign should support a business decision: which services you want to sell, where you can deliver them and what makes an enquiry worthwhile. Click volume alone cannot answer whether the campaign is helping.

Define a qualified enquiry before launch

Write down the service, geographic coverage and customer requirements that make an enquiry a good fit. Include practical limits such as project size or capacity where relevant. A campaign can generate interest in work your team cannot fulfil, so marketing and operations need the same definition of success.

Set a budget you can use to learn without assuming every enquiry will become a sale. There is no universal cost-per-lead target across cleaning, engineering and construction. Different job values, competition and sales processes require different expectations. Avoid making a budget decision from someone else’s headline result.

Separate intent and keep coverage realistic

Group closely related services so an advert and landing page can answer a specific need. Someone researching a general topic may need different information from someone ready to request a service. Review search-term reports where available to understand which searches actually triggered your ads.

Use location settings that reflect the areas you serve, and review the distinction between people present in an area and people expressing interest in it. Build negative-keyword lists from relevant evidence, such as searches for jobs or services you do not offer. Do not exclude useful searches simply because they look unfamiliar.

Give each visit a sensible landing page

The page should explain the advertised service, provide genuine trust signals and make the enquiry route easy to find. Show realistic service coverage and relevant examples. If an ad makes a time-sensitive offer, keep the terms and availability clear on the page as well.

Test forms and phone links on mobile before increasing spend. A slow page, broken form or disconnected inbox wastes demand regardless of campaign settings. Keep consent and privacy requirements in mind when implementing analytics or advertising tags; do not assume a tracking tool removes those obligations.

Review lead quality alongside campaign data

Separate meaningful conversion actions from secondary interactions. A page view is not the same as a submitted enquiry, and a button click is not proof of email delivery. Use the strongest measurable signal available without pretending it tells you more than it does.

Ask the team handling enquiries to record whether leads were relevant, reachable and suitable. Combine that feedback with spend, conversion data and sales outcomes when available. Change one clear problem at a time, allow for the sales cycle and avoid raising the budget solely because clicks are inexpensive.
